Marshmallow Peeps: You either hate them or you can bite the heads off seven flocks in one sitting. There’s really no middle ground when it comes to America’s classically unwholesome Easter treat.

On Friday, Movies on a Big Screen presents Brooklyn filmmaker Matthew Beals’ documentary “The Power of the Peep,” an inquisitive story about the history behind those disturbingly pokerfaced marshmallow birds. The film travels from the Peeps factory in Bethlehem, Pa., all the way to World War I Russia, and it even makes a stop in Sacramento to visit a clandestine annual Peep-eating contest.

My personal favorite way to eat ‘em: Slit the cellophane a day before consumption and let those birds get nice and chewy.

*Update: Boo!  The showing was last night!
